Bertel Thorvaldsen was born into poverty in Denmark in 1770, but when he returned to Denmark in 1838 after having lived in Rome for many years, he was hailed and greeted as a national hero. Such was the power of the man who created one of the most famous statues of Christ ever to be created - The Christus Statue.
