In the hospital recovering from surgery, Leroy Mitchell was depressed and without purpose. The NFL was the long game. There was no back-up plan that interested him. Fortunately the well-timed gift of a Bell Hooks' book from his mentor changed his life. It offered a new way to view his life, his maleness, his future. The conversation on colonial masculinity has opened up my eyes to how much it defines our view of our gender roles, regardless of our sexual identity. Powerful conversation.

Leroy Mitchell is a Masculinity and Mental Health Trainer for the Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective (BEAM).

Favorite song/artist: Frankie Ocean (Link to Thinking 'Bout You)

Favorite words: "Integrity means being whole, unbroken, undivided. It describes a person who has unified the parts of his or her or their personality, so that there is no longer a split in the soul."
