The Super Cup - Facts and Statistics

Introduction

Yesterday, Chelsea took on Bayern Munich in the European Super Cup. The Super Cup was inaugurated in 1972 and is a match between the winners of the continent's two premier tournaments. Now, those two competitions are the UEFA Champions League and The Europa League, but originally it was a game between the winners of the European Cup and the Cup Winners Cup. The game yesterday ended in a 2-2 draw and penalties (the first time in the competition), which Bayern Munich won, giving them their first win in four attempts.

8

Barcelona have featured in the Super Cup eight times, more than any other club. Their last appearance was in 2011 when they beat Porto 2-0.

Monaco

For 15 years the match was held in Monaco. From this year, the venue will change each year. Before the match was held in Monaco the Super Cup was played over two legs, home and away.

5

AC Milan are the most successful club, winning the Super Cup 5 times. Their last victory was a 3-1 win over Sevilla in 2007.

7

The most goals scored in one game. This was Juventus v Paris Saint Germaine in 1996 in the first leg at the French club's ground. By the time PSG's midfielder Laurent Fournier was given his marching orders in the 64th minutes, Juventus were already up by 4 goals. Two other one sided affairs have been Ajax winning one leg 6-0 vs AC Milan in 1974 and Liverpool spanking Hamburg 6-0 in the home leg at Anfield in 1977.

Shading it

European Cup or Champions League Cup winners have 20 victories in this Cup versus 19 from teams from the Cup Winners Cup or Europa League. The premier competition is just shading it.

Top 3

Unsurprisingly Spanish, Italian and English sides are the most successful in the Super Club, with Spanish teams having 10 victories, Italy nine, and England seven.

Cardiff

The next venue for the Super Cup in 2014 is the Welsh capital Cardiff.

110,000

The biggest gate for the match. Dynamo Kiev beat Bayern Munich 3-0 over two legs and 2-0 in front of a home crowd of 110,000 in 1975. Gates at the matches played at Monaco have been poor, averaging around 17,000. The change to different venues each year should mean more fans get to see this one off European cup game.
