His real name was George Herman Ruth
He’s the only person in professional baseball history to have the last name “Ruth”
No one knows exactly when he was born
He didn’t really know either
He thought it was Feb 7th, 1894
Now its accepted as Feb 6th, 1895
What his family thinks is his birth certificate says 1894 but its for an unnamed male in his family
His parents lost 6 kids in infancy and no one is sure which birth certificate is actually his
He started chewing and drinking before 8 years old
He tried chewing tobacco and whiskey really young
He ended up going to a cathlic reform school where the nuns said he was “incorrigible”
He got the nickname “Babe” his first year playing baseball in the International League
No one knows who gave it to him
No one called him Babe before that
Soon after he went to the Red Sox
When he was presumed to be 19 he married a 16 year old
He met her his first day in Boston
She worked at a local coffee shop
He was a star left-handed pitcher for the Red Sox
Now he’s obviously more known for being one of the best sluggers on the Yankees
In the 6 years he was with the Red Sox, they won 3 world series
When he was traded to New York it started a long streak of loses in the World Series for the Red Sox
Its known as the curse of Bambino
In 1919 he hit 29 home runs, which set the new “single-season home run” record
He beat the record again in 1920 and then 1921 again
In 1919 only five teams hit more home runs than Ruth did by himself
With the exception of the RedSox
The company that made the Babe Ruth Candy bar claim that its not named after the baseball player
The Curtiss Candy Company officially claimed that it was named after President Grover Cleveland’s daughter, Ruth
People think that their claim is just a way to get around legal issues
